The course

The course that was measured was already a re-engineering. The course that launches is a third life.

Twenty-one years on one problem — a history told in three versions of one course, each rebuilt on what the last one proved.

01
Three generations

Beloved course. Measured intervention. Public engine.

FIRST GENERATION · THE ORIGINAL

PSYC E-1034, as long taught

Established by Robert Kegan decades ago and offered nearly every year: a beloved graduate course on adult development — minimally deliberately developmental. Intense developmental exercise occupied two of sixteen weeks. Students loved it; the theory moved them; the structure of their minds was not its target.

SECOND GENERATION · THE INTERVENTION

The Harvard study course

Radically restructured for the study: developmental practice through all sixteen weeks, every methodology described in the research integrated — subject–object work, big assumptions, experiments run in one's own life — engineered to the four conditions the growth literature identifies. This is the version that was measured: +0.49 stages vs. control, p = .005.

THIRD GENERATION · THE PUBLIC COURSE

thecourse.org

Rebuilt to live outside academia — no institution, no credit, no prerequisite but a self — with Immunity to Change now aboard and the validated engine untouched. Produced classes instead of recorded lectures; a life instead of a transcript. Launching 2027.

One honest sentence belongs on this page

We do not yet know which components carry the developmental potency. We hold strong hypotheses — the leading one is named below — and the research program exists to find out.

02
The history

Twenty-one years on one problem.

2004

The apprenticeship. Psychometrician and consultant to Robert Kegan — the beginning of two decades inside the theory, its instrument, and its unanswered question: could the growth be produced?

2014

The re-engineering. The Harvard course radically restructured into a deliberately developmental intervention — evaluated at the top of the institution by its students.

2017

The organizational methodology. Workshops, designed simulations, and work-embedded routines — the self-authoring operating system, designed and field-run.

2021

The demonstration. The doctorate: the controlled study showing the growth can be deliberately produced — at both developmental tiers, online, open enrollment.

2026

The rebuild. The paper in submission (Kegan & Shore). The course rebuilt for the world. The platform live.

2027

The launch.

03
The mechanism

What actually produces the growth.

The course works by moving the structures a person is subject to — run by, unable to see — into objects they can examine, question, and author. The mechanisms, held inside a sixteen-week arc of challenge wrapped in support: subject–object work, immunity-to-change maps, big assumptions, and experiments run in one's own life — deliberately engineered to the four conditions the empirical literature identifies as growth-producing: disequilibrating, cognitively and emotionally engaging, interpersonal, personally salient.

The leading hypothesis: R.A.I.S.E. Woven through all sixteen weeks is a practice sequence created for the intervention — with empathy and dedication. We believe this daily architecture is a substantial source of the course's potency. We say believe deliberately: it is our leading hypothesis, not a proven attribution — and the component studies in our research program exist to test exactly this.

To these, the rebuilt course braids in the moment-level tools of acceptance and commitment therapy — among the most heavily trialed behavioral technologies in modern psychology. Its central technique, cognitive defusion, is a subject–object move executed in seconds. ACT's trials evidence clinical and wellbeing outcomes, not stage growth; what it contributes here is the daily mechanics of the very move the course produces at the level of a life.

One move, in one click
I am having the thought thatI am not the kind of person who can do this.

The sentence is reality. There is no distance between the person and the claim — it is the floor they stand on, not something they can look at.

04
Second generation → third

Same engine. A vehicle anyone can drive.

The Harvard course proved the engine. Since then it has been dramatically rebuilt — repackaged for learners who will never set foot in a graduate school, without touching what made it work.

KEPT — THE VALIDATED ENGINE

Subject–object movement · immunity-to-change maps · big assumptions · experiments run in one's own life · challenge held inside support · the sixteen-week arc that produced the measured growth

HARVARD · AS STUDIED
THE COURSE · AS IT LAUNCHES
The front door
Opens in theory: five orders of mind, graduate readings, the field's vocabulary from week one
Opens in life: the Recipe — Name it · Live it · Anchor to it — the destination in plain words; theory arrives when the learner needs it
The materials
Three required books, two paid course packets, library reserve readings
Self-contained: original handouts — the wisdom traditions, the modern bestsellers, the peer-reviewed science — three juries agreeing, with an honesty ledger of what science does not support
The classes
Recorded live academic lectures, posted after the fact
Produced experiences: scripted, cinematic classes with interactions built in — designed to be felt before explained
The design method
Content-led syllabus: readings and lectures carry the week
Every class engineered on four objectives at once — developmental, informational, experiential, social: the very conditions the growth research identifies
The technical training
Trains proto-practitioners: interview-scoring drills, transcript cases, the scoring guide
Learners feel their own structure move — a self-administered taste of the interview — and spend the reclaimed weeks on their own growth
The accountability
Letter grades, graded posts, a final paper, teaching-fellow deadlines
No grades. The experiments you run in your own life are the assessment — the course answers to your Tuesday, not to a transcript
The learner assumed
A graduate student, enrolled for credit, hours of reading a week
Anyone with a life: minutes-a-day practice embedded in ordinary days — no institution, no prerequisite but a self

The study validated the engine. The rebuild gives it to everyone else.

The productized course carries the tested developmental core; its new format is what launch-year cohorts and the replication study will measure.

Why it's different

Every other course changes what you know.

This one is built to change how you know — the structure that does the knowing. That distinction is the whole of it, and it is the reason the outcome had to be measured rather than asserted.

Informational learning — every other course

Changes in what you know

Content is poured in. The vessel stays the same size. Valuable — and structurally unable to produce transformation.

Transformational learning — this course

Changes in how you know

The vessel itself grows. Courses shown to do this against a control group, scored blind: one.

Self-help offers new content to the same mind. This course was shown — against a control group, scored blind — to change the structure doing the knowing. The full study →
